Friday Fictioneers: McExtinction

Hello Friday Fictioneers, happy Thursday after having kicked this off on Wednesday; what a topsy turvy life we live and it’s all due to the masterful Rochelle.

So for some reason this one spoke to me after a few weeks in what i can only describe as the creative doldrums. So thank you to J Hardy Carroll for the prompt, most satisfying. But hold onto your hats people, I’ve got to write the bloody thing yet…

So without further ado…

On My Marks…

Get Set…

GO!!

Old McDonald did once have a farm populated with a very noisy bunch of animals. However animal populations had diminished catastrophically since the eruption of the Yellowstone super volcano.

The decades of darkness which followed spawned a behemoth flesh eating cockroach and an eerie Silence fell over humankind, hunting for sustenance, fearing for their lives.

Gradually the virulent clouds dissipated and the Photophobic peril succumbed to the light; withering and decaying.

A Mute MacDonald evolved, surviving on salted cockroach flesh and using colouring books preserved in the basement of the homestead to recall and learn past pastoral pursuits.

No E-I-E-I-O.

So there we are; a bleak look into an abysmal future and all for 100 words!! Whoop, Whoop!

Hope you enjoy.

  1. A yucky but good story well written, Shrawley. I was thinking of the depiction of that super volcano exploding in the movie “2012” with Woody Harleson standing there thrilled with the sight. I’m not sure I could survive on salted cockroach but you never know what you’ll eat if you get really hungry. I hope I never have to find out. 😦 — Suzanne
